Why is breathwork so important?

Lifestyle & Breathwork Specialist, Hypnotherapist and Yoga Instructor Anisha Badri shares some insights

“Breathing is vital for our day-to-day life and to live an optimal life. It’s a technique fundamental to calming the emotional turbulence within us, the moments when we feel triggered by daily occurrences that can affect the many things we do.”

Physiologically, as soon as we start to feel stressed about something our blood pressure goes up, when that happens it effects the heart and creates a great deal of turmoil within the endocrine system and the nervous system, all of which can have staggering effects on our health at an emotional, mental and physical level. What breathwork does, is to helps us to tap into the parasympathetic nervous system, the place of rest and reset rather than operating from a fight or flight response. Therefore, from a physiological perspective it aids in calming the mind, enabling us to operate from a relaxed place where we make better decisions, are more fulfilled and feel a sense of contentment.

A wonderful breathing technique that one can use at any time of the day, when feeling any kind of anxiety, before an event or meeting, or even upon waking up first thing in the morning or right before going to bed, is Box Breathing. Sitting down comfortably, take a deep breath in counting for 4, hold that breath for 4 counts, breath out for 4 counts, and then hold the exhale for 4 counts. With just one round of this exercise, you will already feel a shift and within three to five rounds, you have given yourself time to process what it is you need to act on and have also relaxed your nervous system.

Breathwork is the ultimate hack to allow us to work, make decisions and just to live a life from a place of contentment and calm.
