When you feel overwhelmed or a rise in surge of emotions, or simply that ‘I’ve had enough’ feeling:
Go to a mirror and smile.
Now close your eyes.
Place your hands on your heart and feel your strong supportive heartbeat.
Make an O shape with your mouth inhaling from the mouth for a count of 5
Close your lips and allow the breath to leave through the nose effortlessly
Repeat this for 3-10 rounds
Open your eyes
Smile
Feel yourself illuminated inside and out
Dr Oliver Bernath – Consultant Neurologist and Sleep Disorders Specialist
As the season of giving presents is approaching, here are two considerations that have been shown in research to increase happiness:
For the Mind:
Giving experiences as presents has a higher happiness value than giving objects to both the giver and the recipient of presents; and paying for the gift upfront avoids the dampening effect of having to pay at the end of an experience. By the time the experience is enjoyed, the “pain” of payment has been forgotten.
For Sleep:
We are now in the dark season. Don’t forget to take Vitamin D supplements regularly, as it is important for your immune system to fight off cold and flu viruses, as well as reducing tiredness. Also make sure you get enough daylight, especially first thing in the morning when you get up. You may benefit from a SAD lamp (Seasonal Affective Disorder lamp – 10,000 lux).
Kiran Chopra – Lead Sport and Exercise Physiologist
“During the holidays, it’s easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of activities and forget about our physical health. A simple yet effective way to stay active is by keeping up with your daily step count. Aim for a brisk 30-minute walk each day, which can be a festive stroll through your neighbourhood to see the holiday decorations, a quick walk around while doing your holiday shopping or getting everyone together for walk with your family on Christmas Eve. Remember, every step counts towards a healthier you this holiday season.”
Samson Garwood – Gym Manager
“The lead up to Christmas can be a time where our workload is decreased, work quietening down and our diary’s filling up with social events. This is the perfect time to schedule in your training sessions, but feel free to move away from your rigid training plan and understand these sessions are a bonus and should be perceived as such. Finishing the year with new energy and zero festive guilt!”
Dr Nikita Grover – Head of Functional Medicine
“When the festive season gets going and your social commitments start ramping up: Prioritise the beginning of the day for yourself
Go for that walk or swim.
Get your protein rich breakfast in as being satisfied enables you to make better food choices in the day
You achieved something already, wave that guilt away.“
Prof Jonathan Roos – Consultant Oculoplastic & Aesthetic Surgeon
“As the temperature drops, sparkle with glowing healthy skin using our ice-based exosome treatment with multiple skin actives – reported in the Hello Aesthetics Guide 2023 and now available at the Lanserhof in Dover street.”
Dr Carla Saour – General Practitioner with Specialist Interest in Women’s Health/Menopause
“The holiday season can be overwhelming, so it’s important to find healthy ways to manage this. Practice deep breathing exercises, try meditation or yoga or engage in activities that brings you joy and relaxation.“
Paul Tanner – Physiotherapist
“When wrapping presents, make sure you are not bent over for long periods of time, prolonged flexion of the spine can put pressure on the discs in your back so make sure you prepare properly and maintain a good posture!!”
